Getting A Job After Bankruptcy
By Brian Douglas
OK, let's face it. Some employers will run credit checks on you and may deny you employment after bankruptcy. Is it fair? I don't think so. Does it stink? Sure. But that's how it is. Many employers think that your credit history will impact on your ability to be a good employee.
Frankly, it's not worth discussing the merits of their policy--it is what it is. So--that said, you'll want to focus on the employers that do NOT check credit as a condition of employment. Most employers don't, so it's not going to be a big problem. I don't care whether it's Chapter 7 or Chapter 13, you're still going to get a great job!
Your biggest key to getting a great job after bankruptcy is to--drumroll here--
BE DIFFERENT!
That's right--just as Apple's famous advertising told you to "Think Different", so too, must your job-hunting techniques. Remember, if you do what everyone else does, you'll get what they get. And that's definitely NOT a job!
I'll be preparing a special report on finding the perfect job after bankruptcy (check my blog for details!-- BankruptcySurvivalSystem dot com/free, but in the meantime, here are some tips and hints:
-
Do not just send a resume blindly. You need to determine who the decision-maker is and address him/her directly. And make sure your resume (or marketing piece) stands out. They get tons of resumes every day--What makes YOURS different?
-
Determine what your target employer needs, and consider that you're "selling" them a solution--YOU are their solution. (By the way--you really want to BELIEVE this to your core--and when you land that interview, you need to be conveying it very clearly to the person interviewing you!)
-
Be relentless at following up. I had a candidate recently that didn't stop emailing and even texting me (I had no idea that gmail had a texting feature, but she knew--and would send me messages!). Even though I'd initially chosen another candidate, she build such a strong rapport with me, that I ultimately wanted to hire her for any new position I could find.
-
Don't give up! The average person quits just before they reach success. So they fail and never discover how close they came to getting what they want. You CAN get the job you want--with a generous compensation plan--after your bankruptcy. Remember--you offer quite a bit--and now that you've been "through the mill", you have a level of maturity that most people don't have!
So go get 'em, Tiger!
