As many people have found out it can be quite difficult to get more than 2000 followers on Twitter. That's because Twitter has imposed a system limit that any account can only follow 2000 users total... which is obviously wrong. There are accounts that have 200,000 followers (10x more than what Twitter says is the limit).

What Twitter doesn't really say is that you can only follow 2000 users, IF you have less than 2000 followers yourself. Meaning that if you have more than 2000 people who are following you, you can have more than 2000 people you are following. I hope you followed that because it's kind of like doing mental gymnastics to figure this thing out. Once again, if you have 2000 followers, you can have more than 2000 people you are following.

Now you might be wondering how this applies to the problem of getting more than 2000 followers. Well, the problem is that most people get followers by following other people first. You would be hard pressed to have 2000 people become your followers without you following them first.

It's not that hard to have 2000 people become your followers once you have 10,000 followers, or if you are a celebrity, but I assuming that you are neither a celebrity or have 10,000 followers... If you are/have these things then thank you for reading this, but you can stop reading because this really doesn't apply to you anyway.

Now back to the problem of getting more than 2000 followers and how to solve it.

In order for you to get more than 2000 followers you will want to follow, lets say, 100-150 people per day. Then once a week, or every 3-4 days if you want to try to speed things up a bit, unfollow EVERYONE who is not following you back. You'll want to do this until you get to 2000 people you are following. If you have been doing this right the number of followers you have will be close to 2000 people as well.

At this point you will probably get a message saying you can't follow any more people. That's ok; you'll just have to unfollow some more people. You might even have to unfollow people who are following you back. Again, that's ok. Your goal is to get more than 2000 followers. Once you have achieved that goal it's wide-open territory... There are no longer any following/follower limits... Well actually that's a lie. You can't follow more than 1000 people per day.

You'll want to do this at a 'reasonable' rate. There are no guidelines for what's 'reasonable', but if you do this too fast you will get your account suspended for excessive follower churn, and/or aggressive following. Just be sensible about it.

You'll also want to know that there have been recent changes to Twitter's API terms, which has lead to a decrease in the amount of automation allowed by Twitter users. This will affect how you start following others.
