Vacuum cleaners are bought for many reasons. One of the things to consider when purchasing a good vacuum, is how long it will be expected to last. Here are a few things to look for.

Customers ask us often "How long will this vacuum cleaner last?". There are several things to look for in your next vacuum that will make your vacuum cleaner last longer.

What is the main casing made from? Metal last longer than plastic. A metal casing will last decades unless you hit it with a hammer. And epoxy casing will be lightweight, and will also last for decades. There are even grades of plastic. Lexan is more durable than ABS. But even the cheapest plastic casing will last decades unless someone breaks it.

Motors will either have a metal or plastic shell. A motor with a plastic shell will seal in heat trapping it until it wears out the motor. A metal motor will conduct heat away from the inside of the motor. Metal motors last longer than plastic motors. Be sure to ask your local dealer about the type of motor the vacuum cleaner has.

Metal roller brushes are the best and most durable. Wood is less durable, but will usually not break. Plastic roller brushes are most common on the least expensive vacuums. Plastic roller brushes will melt if hair gets caught in the roller bearings.

The actual brushes should be of natural fibers, commonly known as "horsehair". Nylon brushes are less durable, although the difference in brushes is rather minor.

The warranty of the machine will tell you a lot about the expected lifetime of the vacuum cleaner.

A one year warranty is pretty standard. A three or four year warranty meas that the manufacturer expects the vacuum to last much longer.

The reality is that if you do not abuse your vacuum cleaner, it will serve you for many years. Broken parts almost always are the result of abuse. Parts do not break on their own. They must be "broken" by someone.
