Historically, Panama building practices have ignored energy efficiency. However, as energy costs continue to rise here in Panama, like everywhere else, this is finally beginning to change.
More and more customers, especially clients coming from the US and abroad, are insisting that their homes be built to the highest standards in order to reduce air-conditioning and other costs. You are finally beginning to see Panama buildings and structures created in a way that takes the cost of electricity into account.
Panama buildings may lag behind other countries in this regard. But, it has become obvious, that no matter where you are in the world, you want your home or office to be built in a way that keeps your energy costs low, while protecting the environment.
Here are 5 tips to keep in mind when planning your next construction project.
Plan on an extra 10% in construction costs
The first thing you need to deal with up front when planning your energy efficient building, is it is more than likely going to cost more to build. By assuming an extra 10% in costs up front, you will not be disappointed as you move forward with your plans.
Take the Direction Your Home Is Facing Into Account
As you are going over your home or building plan with your architect, think about the direction of the sun, prevailing winds and other environmental factors. For example, having a big picture window directly facing the 2:00 sun is going to raise your air-conditioning costs considerably in a Panama building. However, in a colder climate, it my actually help to reduce your heating costs.
Use Proper Insulation
If you want your home or business to be energy efficient, you need to be able to keep the hot (or cold) air outside where it belongs. If your structure is not correctly insulated and sealed, your heating or cooling equipment will be constantly fighting to keep you at a comfortable temperature.
Utilize the Proper Size of Heating / Cooling Equipment
Discuss your heating and cooling needs with a competent experienced contractor. Having units that are too small will require them to run for a very long time to keep you comfortable. Units that are too large will just waste energy.
Research Energy Saving Technology
New technology is being introduced everyday which will lower your electricity and other costs and protect the environment. These range from low tech items like skylights that reduce your need for electricity, to high tech items like solar panels that create new energy for you. There is a wide range of different items available depending on your budget, goals and location.
Panama building contractors like contractors all over the world are learning more about energy efficient building all the time. But because the costs involved in construction are often higher, they may not mention these options to you if you don't ask.
It is your responsibility to research different options on your own. And to decide just how "green" you want your project to be. Keeping in mind your budget.
Discuss your options and your budget with your architect and contractor. Chances are, they will be up to the challenge of making your new home or business as efficiently as possible.
Energy costs have started to go through the roof. This has caused Panama building contractors and customers to constantly re-evaluate their building practices. This is probably true wherever you are as well.
