eBook Publishing: How To Create eBook Covers

It has been said that "You Can't Judge A Book By It's Cover" and that may be true in life, but in the World of Words people DO judge books by their cover. The eye-gate is very powerful and a good cover can make all the difference to your sales.

Most writers put all their effort into the text, leaving the cover as an afterthought, and this is a big mistake.

"Book covers sell books. Unfortunately, for most authors the cover becomes an after thought. Your cover is your most vital marketing tool - maximize its power!" -- Dan Poynter, Bestselling author of The Self-Publishing Manual.

Using a fishing metaphor, the cover is your bait that "hooks" your customer. Your eBook cover must awaken a need, want or desire in your target market.

Did you know...

• Consumers make a buying decision without reading a book?

• Shop buyers make a decision based on the cover(s) the rep shows them?

• Wholesalers/Distributors say, "Just send us the cover(s).."?

Advertisers and Marketers know that packaging prompts customers to reach for their product and In the online world, it is no different. Your eBook cover is an inexpensive way to market your book.

The cover should be bold, distinctive and intriguing enough to catch the eye. Every word must be used to sell what is inside. A good book cover is like a good advert. It should tell the potential reader something good, relevant and believable about the eBook, identify it clearly and leave the consumer wanting to buy it. The cover must say: "Buy Me."

Alan Gadney commissioned covers for three computer books he planned to write. He had the covers printed in four colours and made into dummy books for display at a Book Fair in the USA. His books were the talk of the show and he took a number of large orders. Covers must be important because he had not yet written one word on the subject!

Working on the cover early helps you to focus and fine-tune your content. On the cover, you tell people what they are going to get out of your eBook. Then, as you create the content, you can make sure you deliver on every point.
