Everyday it's amazing how many people tell me that they are satisfied with their reading speed and that they see no reason at all, to improve on it. Personally, it doesn't make sense, and it seems that they are simply stuck in their own ways and don't care to spend even the slightest bit of time developing a skill that could change their life forever. Don't think of this as an over-dramatic emphasis on speed reading, but simply think of how much time you spend reading each day or each week. An hour or two? Total?
Most students who learn how to speed read double or triple their reading speed in the first week. Now those two hours turn into one, and your life is changed. Granted it is only one hour less reading time per week, but stretch that over a year. You've just gained 2 Full days time, by learning a skill that took you a few minutes a day for a week. Over a life time, you gain several months that would have been "wasted" reading slowly. Same benefits gained by reading the material are involved, but in half the time. Again, all this time saved is using the low estimate of doubling your reading speed, while most people can multiply their own several times over.
- Time Saving
Reading faster allows you to absorb more information in less time. No need to expand on that, its straightforward as-is.
- Competitive Advantage
Jobs, school, personal development; the amount of reading required is increasing every day. Reading faster allows you to perform better than your co-workers and your classmates. Higher performance, output, grades, etc; It's better to stand out at the top, opposed to being lost in the middle, or even worse, stuck at the bottom.
- Information Overload
21st Century, computers, internet, iPads, iPods, and Google. Way too much information to take in using the old fashioned method of reading. If the materials we are reading have changed, don't you think that we need to change the way we are reading them. Going at 200 words per minute was fine in the 60′s but now there's 50 more years of material for us to go through, and it continues to expand everyday.
- Improved Vision
Speed Reading will not make you take off your glasses tomorrow, and give you perfect vision, (more info about improving your eyesight, google the Bates Method), however many of the exercises help develop under utilized muscles in the eye. You will have a much stronger peripheral vision, viewing out of the sides of your eye, which can be useful in loads of situations.
- Freedom
Studying for a test for hours on end is no longer required. You can learn the material at a much faster rate, and then spend that time where you choose. Reading the report for your boss, and preparing for the presentation now requires half as much time because you decided to learn how to speed read. Reading now becomes an easy task instead of a laborious chore. You choose how to spend your time, instead of being stuck behind a book, that you wouldn't have ever read in the first place.
