You have a website or a blog and you are trying to sell your products from it but you have no traffic so you use a great marketing ploy to get tons of traffic to your site which floods traffic to you for two days to a week. Then you go back to having no traffic and have to think up another marketing trick to get the traffic flowing for a few days again.
But what if you put your effort into getting just a little more traffic every day instead of tons of traffic for a short time? Would that be better use of your time in the long run? I think so.
I'm not saying it can't happen overnight from any kind of marketing tactic because I am a strong believer in that concept as many things have happened over night for me; But I am saying instead of focusing too much attention into making a viral ad that people can't resist how about using truthful and long lasting tactics every single day to slowly increase your traffic and instead put minimal effort into viral ads that are meant for potentially becoming viral?
I do like viral marketing and I think it's a great way to get lots of traffic to your site. It usually goes like this...you make the most humorous video ever made and before you know it everyone is sending it to everyone else. Hits on the video are literally adding up every second and you can feel the sales that are going to start coming in soon and soon you do get a sale or two. And then you get - nothing; No more sales and no more traffic.
Or maybe you put out the best one liner in a pay per click ad that no one can resist clicking on but when they get to your site they find that there really is no 'weird trick to lose belly fat' that they were promised and they quickly click out of your site having wasted their time. And they will never be back to your site as they know the ads are most likely tricks to get them there and they will not recommend your site to anyone which is a huge loss for you.
Why not focus on real ads and videos that are 100% related to what you are offering and target it towards people who are interested in your product instead of just the tagline?
When you are sending out targeted marketing ads for your product that are related to your product or site and are on the exact topic you may see less traffic coming in to your site at first but they will be product related traffic. This is the traffic that is most likely really interested in what you have to offer them and less interested in just watching the video and forwarding it to get some laughs. Now if you can keep increasing the numbers of visitors you get every day of targeted traffic then you are more likely to get sales.
Remember that traffic that clicks on your ads and find that it is exactly what they are looking for may help you go viral by recommending you and what you offer to other people because of their experience.
Bottom line - Yes it's good to make potential humorous and eye catching viral ads that may hit a broader but a less target audience, but if you want to increase your traffic daily don't spend more time on those ads directed to the masses then you do on some truthful and interesting marketing to your target audience.
