The esophageal cancer occurs in four stages and the survival rate of the people goes on decreasing as they pass stage by stage. The spread of esophageal cancer can be reduced in some ways such as by giving treatment with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, naturopathy treatment etc.
The esophageal cancer may also reoccur if it is not treated properly. The treatment such as surgery may be provided to the patient, but if the tumor cells are not removed completely from the patient’s body then there is a chance of esophageal cancer to reoccur.
Similarly, if the patient underwent treatment such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, then the esophageal cancer causing cells should be destroyed completely by the radiations. If the cells are left back without destroying, the cancer may start spreading again leading to increase of cancer cells.
Even after the surgery or some type of therapy is performed, the patient has to be taken care of and should under go periodic check ups to confirm that the cancer cells are destroyed completely. The recurrent disease is diagnosed readily and it is differentiated from the scar tissue. The overall prognosis for esophageal cancer may depend upon many factors and the main factors among them are the age and general health of the patient and the stage of the disease how far it has spread from diagnosis.
The prognosis also gets poorer stage by stage in the patient. The possibilities for the prognosis will depend on the whole portion or a part of the esophagus affected the size of the tumor and overall health of the patient. As the disease is diagnosed in earlier stage, the treatment can also be given in earlier stage which may increase the chances of survival of the patient affected by esophageal cancer.
As the cancer cells spread in the body in many ways such as through the lymphatic nodes, organs, tissues etc, the treatment is provided for all affected areas. The process in which the esophageal cancer cells spread or travel through the blood or lymph from the primary tumor of origin for separating different parts of the body is called metastasis.
Some natural remedies are also available which may improve the chances of recovery or prognosis with a balanced diet for the patients in the fourth stage of esophageal cancer. For the patients with no nodal involvement or with T1 or T2 disease, the 5 year survival rate may be greater than 40%
The patients in this final stage of esophageal cancer are normally treated with palliative chemotherapy as this increases the survival rate of the patient to a certain extent after the treatment. The treatment for the fourth stage of esophageal cancer involves esophageal stinting as a palliative therapy to improve the diagnoses by alleviating the symptoms and increasing the quality of life. The radiation therapy (internal and external radiation therapy) is used in the form of palliative therapy to improve the quality of life of the patients and also relieves the symptoms.
