The esophageal cancer can be treated in many ways such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, naturotherapy etc. If the esophageal cancer is diagnosed in earlier stages, then the rate of survival for the cancer affected patients may be increased. Among all types of treatments, surgery is preferred by many people and also it proves to be a successful method of treatment.
There are two main types of surgery such as esophagectomy in which the surgeon takes out a part of the esophagus and Esophagogastrectomy in which the surgeon takes out a part of the esophagus along with a part of the upper stomach. The first type of surgery (esophagectomy) is done for the people with earlier stages of esophageal cancer which is not spread much to the stomach.
The second type of surgery (Esophagogastrectomy) is recommended for the patients with esophageal cancer spread upto the lower end of the esophagus or to stomach. A metallic tube called stent is also inserted into the esophagus to keep the esophagus open.
In esophagus a loop or ring may be formed. The lower esophageal ring is an abnormal muscular ring of tissue that forms in the region of meeting point of the esophagus and stomach. The lower esophageal ring is also called as the esophagogastric ring or Schatzki’s ring. This loop or ring of muscles prevents the food from moving backwards in the esophagus.
The lower esophageal ring may be caused due to swallowing of dangerous acids or other corrosive materials, intake of some high power drugs for digestive problems etc. In some cases, it may also be due to birth defect. It can also be caused due to injury caused by GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease), acid reflux and regurgitation, intake of alkaline foods, heart burn, stress, indigestion, malfunctioning of the lower esophageal sphincter etc.
The symptoms for lower esophageal ring may be pain and difficulty in swallowing process and chest pain under the breast bone called sternum, severe pain in the stomach region etc. The tests for this disease include upper GI (x-ray with barium) and EGD (Esophagogastrodudenoscopy).
The treatment for this esophageal ring involves stretching of the ring by passing a device called a dilator through that area. The abnormal esophageal ring can also be widened by placing a balloon in that area and inflating it. When the process of dilation does not work, then the process of surgery may be required for cutting or removing the abnormal tissue.
In the prognosis for lower esophageal ring, the swallowing problems may return and for that the treatments done should be repeated. Then it may lead to better results.
