It is a known fact that golden retrievers are lovable, sociable and very irresistible. However, many of the golden retrievers end up in rescue centers each year because of variety of reasons. Most of these rescued dogs came from irresponsible breeders who breed so many puppies that they can no longer sell. Some retrievers end up in rescue centers because their owners are incapable of raising them well. There are also times when it is not the owner’s fault why their retrievers end up in rescue homes. There are times that dog owners are forced to move to another place where keeping a dog isn’t feasible. Volunteers run these rescue centers until such time that a new owner for the rescued dog is found. With this stated fact, wouldn’t it be nice if you are one of those concerned citizens that would choose to adopt a golden retriever? But before even deciding if you are capable to adopt golden retriever, let us first take a look of the advantages and disadvantages of adopting a golden. The place where you should find a good breed of dog is also a critical issue to tackle.

First thing you should do is to ask yourself whether you are capable of adopting a golden retriever. If you have no experience of a dog ownership, then adopting a golden retriever is not a good option for you. Majority of this golden retrievers who came from rescue centers were maltreated and they require good handling and proper training to make them a balanced retriever again. See to it that you can commit to long term dog ownership knowing that golden retrievers have an average lifespan of 14 years. If you cannot commit to a long term dog ownership, then it is the dog’s welfare that you are taking at risk. On the other hand, if you were able to raise good dogs in the past, then adopting a retriever can be a good option for you. Your experience in your previous dog ownership can guide you towards raising your golden appropriately.

If you are certain that you are capable of adopting a golden, the next step you should do is find the appropriate place form where you can adopt a golden. Animal shelter and breed rescue centers are the two main places where abandoned goldens end up. Breed rescue centers are specific to particular breed of dogs while animal shelter caters wider variety of pets including cats, and different breeds of dog. If you don’t have a particular breed in mind, then the best place to look for a dog to adopt is the animal shelter. But if your mind is set to adopt a retriever, then go to the nearest breed rescue centers. Most volunteers from these centers run a foster home and are capable of taking good care of the breed. One good thing about breed rescue center is that you have to submit an application if you want to adopt a dog. Before the center grants the adoption, they will conduct a home visit to make sure that you are really capable of adopting a retriever.
