Golden retrievers epitomize beauty and intelligence. Golden retriever breeds are not only elegant but they are also very intelligent. There brain can easily pick up new tasks. However, even if golden retriever puppies are highly intellectual, patience should still be your guide in training them. If you are teaching your golden something which is against his nature, or if he could not get the routine quickly, you must extend your patience.

Using the rewards method is highly recommended for training your goldens because the leash method of training has a negative effect on the temperament of golden retrievers. Remember that golden retrievers respond very well to positive reinforcement. Therefore, make certain that you compliment your dog for every command that he can follow.

Verbal command is also highly recommended as a way of training your goldens. Thus, it is advised for you to attend a regular obedience class so that you will be able to learn how to communicate well with your golden. Golden retrievers can learn very quickly through verbal command. Start your training with the "sit" command. If your goldie was able to follow the command successfully give him a reward. This way, your golden retriever can perceive that he can get a reward for every command that is followed properly. Thus, your golden can be more motivated to learn and follow commands. After your golden has mastered the sit command, you can now proceed with other commands such as roll over, lie down, and so on. And keep in mind that you have to reward your golden for every accomplishment.

The next set of command is the leash method. But understand that the leash method is only a tool to let your golden retriever know what you want further. The command of "go" and "stop" can be learned through a leash method. If the leash is tightened it means "stop", on the other hand when the leash is loosened it means "go". Again, reward is a must in every command that is obeyed properly. All the other harder command such as "stay" is suggested to be taught in the later part of the training. Do not confuse your dog. Teach one command at a time because a confused dog cannot understand well and cannot follow a command well. All the other complicated commands must be taught only if you and your dog are firmly grounded with the other commands that are basic and are easy to follow. Another thing is, while teaching your golden new tricks, go through the old ones once in a while so that your dog will not be able to forget the old tricks, or worst, confuse a new trick with the old one.
