You can always better your golf swing no matter how long you've been playing, amateur or not you can always improve. I'm going to give you just three simple steps to a better golf swing which you can put into practice easily for great results.
Step One: Visualization
As you know golf is a very mental game. After all it's just you and the course.
A great way to improve your swing is to visualize yourself doing well on the course. If you think positively you'll play much better - trust me!
If you handle bad shots negatively or just get to the course with a bad attitude then you're already working against yourself - you become your own worst enemy.
The first thing I want you to do is develop a pre-shot routine. You may already have one but if you don't it's crucial to your game that you get one.
A good pre-shot routine should involve;
-
Standing over your ball in the correct set-up position.
-
Picking an area on the course where you want your ball to land- this will be your target.
-
Relaxing and ensuring that you're balanced
-
Imagining your ball landing on target.
Use this as an example to work from but make sure that your pre shot routine is suited to you.
Secondly I want you to focus on how you deal with poor shots- those shots that didn't land on target.
I don't want you to focus all your thoughts on missed shots - these are negative thoughts that will just end up frustrating you. This frustration will then have a negative affect on your next shot.
You'll get stuck in a negative loop, so when you miss a shot just think to yourself "I did all I can, I can't change my last shot, but I can do better on my next shot."
Step Two; Hitting Your Ball
The best tip I can give you when it comes to hitting the ball is to relax and try to swing through the ball.
As you know in golf you should never try and lift the ball by hitting up at it. In fact if you want the ball to go up you need to hit down,
This may seem illogical; you want the ball to go up so it seems logical to try to slide the lofted clubface under the ball on the upswing, however this is wrong, for a start the clubface has not been designed to lift the ball.
So you should hit down on the ball with every club except your driver and putter. Never attempt to lift the golf ball with your club. The clubhead should strike the ball as it descends in the downswing.
Step Three: Rotating the Body & Adding Power
Adding more power to the golf swing is something which all of us golfers want to do. Giving your swing that sought after power boost is much easier than you think.
All you need to do is use your body correctly. You see the power in your game comes from the way you rotate your body and shift your weight.
So to boost your power follow these steps;
-
Hinge the wrists in the backswing as you rotate the shoulders - this stores power up from the start.
-
At the start of the downswing you to begin unhinging the wrists. Whilst continuing the rotation of the body, begin to shift your weight to your front foot.
-
Continue this rotation of the body - shoulders, the hips and the weight shift until the arms and club are near the ball.
-
This weight transfer to the front foot gives you power through impact.
-
It's time for all that power you've built up in the swing to be released as you swing through the ball.
Practice...
If you follow these three simple steps to a better golf swing and put them into action you'll see results very quickly. Don't forget to practice, relax and have fun!
