Crown molding is a kind of finish trim made for installing on top of a wall, right below the ceiling. Though these trims seem to be easy to choose from, yet the buyer actually has to consider several different factors before selecting a molding. A good decision is to settle on what size of molding one must use. Sometimes a molding which too large can look awkward in smaller rooms while one too small may not create the desired impact. Hence, when selecting a right sized molding for a room, one must consider factors like molding function, ceiling height etc. Among other decorative options for a good room finish, you may consider fiberglass columns and decorative corbels.
Ceiling Height:
The first thing that needs to be considered is the height of the ceiling in a room. A larger crown molding should be installed in rooms that have high ceilings, while rooms that have shorter ceilings look better with moldings that are smaller in size. Generally, the rooms having 7 foot ceiling require a molding which is 3 inches or lesser, while a room with 8 foot ceiling needs molding of 4 or 5 inches.
Other Moldings:
One must decide beforehand whether one wants to use other types of molding, apart from the crown molding. Several architects mix thin strips of trim with the traditional crown molding. If one plans to make use of the thin trims, then its best to select a crown molding which is at least an inch smaller than what was to be used. Combining two different kinds of trim will only produce a dramatic look, and a molding that's very large could spoil the look in a smaller space.
Function:
Another important thing to consider is, what exactly does the owner hope to achieve by installing a molding? Several homeowners make use of this trim to enhance the look of the room. Some may use this to conceal wires and speaker cables, lights and the like. If one is making use of molding to hide wires, it is best to select a trim which is large enough to serve this goal.
Installation:
Decide how the crown molding should be installed. While the bigger pieces of the molding can be too overpowering when fitted on top of a smaller wall, they can be used in other ways. In a relatively small room, big pieces can be installed at the length of the ceiling to make a small room look bigger. To attain this look, one should install identical sections of moldings both at the top of a wall and the ceiling to produce a mirror image.
Before deciding on any kind of crown molding, it's important to evaluate costs. Bigger pieces tend to cost more money. This is also true for the molding which is thicker, higher, or longer than average. Hence, to keep the price low, it's better to select a molding which is small and is also shorter in length. Moreover, it's also important to choose the molding provider wisely. Research well about the options available and settle with the one which offers a good price and excellent service.
