Start by securing your opponent in your closed guard and slightly allow him to posture up. Then switch your grips on his Bjj Gi sleeves by kind of criss crossing your arms. With your left hand firmly grab a hold of his left Bjj Gi sleeve and with your right hand firmly grab a hold of his right Bjj Gi sleeve. You must maintain your grips and simply have patience and wait for him to stand up to try to pass your guard.

As soon as your opponent stands up to pass your guard, quickly pick an arm you want to go after. For the purposes of this article let’s pretend you decide to go after his left arm. So again as soon as he stands up to pass your guard quickly grab a hold of his Jiu Jitsu Gi pants from his left leg firmly and pivot your head around. Your head should be close to and almost touching his left leg and your right leg should be over his left shoulder. Keep in mind that it is important to maintain your grip on his Bjj Gi sleeve.

Next you make your opponent fall to the mat with his head down towards the mat. You do this by continuing to grip his left hands Bjj Gis sleeve and with your right hand on his Bjj Gi pants you simply stretch his leg and your body out. This will secure him on the floor and help you continue to maintain control.

As soon as you get him in this position you must immediately sit up. When you do sit up on this position it is important with your right hand to hold him across his lower back to prevent him from rolling out which is the most common escape from uma plata. You must still maintain grip of his sleeve on his Bjj Gi. You are not done yet. Now lean forward keeping your weight down on him to prevent his movement and to finish the submission slowly try to get your right knee touching the mat. Be sure to do this slowly as it is very effective. And there you have it, you have just learned how to do the Uma Plata, a great submission in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
