In order to become a successful Cameraman, you need to review and then choose the field that you want to work in. A Cameraman is defined as a person who operates a film or television camera, however there are many different areas that you can specialize in. For example, you may want to travel and work with wildlife and animals. You may want to work on film sets, news programs, sports programs, outside broadcasts, documentaries, music videos or a host of other options.
There are many different career path options as a Cameraman and the genre you choose will depend on your passion, talent and skill.
If you love sports and hate to travel then there would be little point developing yourself as a documentary Cameraman (which can involve constant travel). Of course, you may want to explore various genres first before choosing one or more to focus on as your primary career choice.
This choice will come down to the skills and talents you posses. It will also be determined by the genre that really lights you up and has you excited to go to work each day. You may want to specialize in certain area that requires more time to become proficient with.
Most cameramen will find a specific niche that suits them after a few years of experience. Also, you may decide to work across a mixture of the genres. There is no need for a Cameraman to specialize if you don’t want to. As such, you can work across all genres depending on the projects and jobs that you enjoy and come across.
There are a number of types of camerawork that do require a high level of specialization. A good example of this is becoming an underwater Cameraman. With this example, you can find yourself shooting underwater for a documentary, commercial, wildlife or even a music video. You will need to have specific skills and earn qualifications in order to become successful in this genre.
There are many Cameramen who are sports fanatics. As such, they only want to specialize in the sports field. Their great knowledge of the sports world makes this a very sensible and exciting genre to get into. Likewise, if you love adventure and want to travel, then try and follow the Expedition, Documentary, Wildlife or even News route.
There are also many Cameramen that get into the business because they want to work in the drama industry. You need to understand what is involved inside this genre as often it can be an intense work schedule that you need to be prepared for. There are however, many benefits and it is one of the most exciting places to work. On top of this, drama shoots always have the best food for the camera crew!
As you can see, there are many genres to choose from which is another great reason to get into this varied and wide ranging career.
