Learning to read faster is a great asset in today's society. Not only are you tested on it at school, but it becomes rather essential for your career. Although many boast about being fast readers, it is rather hard to carry this out whilst absorbing a lot of information. With the plethora of research carried out on reading fast, there are several techniques and programs that have been designed for to help many readers with this problem.

The ability to read fast was discovered with the tachistoscope. Research carried out by the US Air Force and Harvard Business School suggested that human minds have the ability to handle more information than what is perceived. Thus, instead of being able to grasp only 100 to 400 words per minute, with the right techniques this rate can be doubled or tripled! More research was carried out by Evelyn Woods, a school teacher, who wanted to desperately understand why people have different reading speeds. She discovered the term speed reading, when she realised she could use her hands to increase her reading. Thus, she came up with a speed reading software: Reading Dynamics, that gives direct clues as to how she increased her reading speed.

Helpful Techniques to Read Faster

Since all human brains work in a similar manner, it is easy to apply the research that has been carried out on speed reading. Additionally, researchers have found that there are certain elements readers need to eradicate from their daily reading ritual. There are other techniques that have been deemed useful to increase reading speed. These techniques include:

  • Reduce vocalization or sub vocalization. Reciting the words out loud or in your mind would just slow you down as you would take time for pronunciation. Practicing without any type of vocalization would ensure a rise in reading speed.

  • In order to absorb as much information, make sure you read whole blocks of words than one word at a time. Reading whole sentences or phrases would greatly increase your reading speed.

  • Do not re-read words as this would just take up more time. Instead cover the words read with a piece of card or paper so that the temptation does not arise.
