Toying with the idea of homeschooling your kids? You might want to know first about the pros and cons of homeschooling.
Homeschooling used to be a taboo subject a mere 30 years ago and only diehard iconoclasts dared to take this icy-cold, death-defying plunge. Not only was there very little support from society but it was frustratingly difficult to get decent homeschool curricula at that time.
People who homeschooled in the 80s felt as isolated as Inuits shivering in their igloos in the Arctic.
But times have changed. Now homeschooling is alive and kicking. And the sale of homeschool curricula is a burgeoning business.
Why is homeschooling flourishing? That is a no brainer. It works!
I don’t mean that everyone should jump into the hurtling bandwagon. There are many things to take into consideration before parents should finally take the plunge.
For one, it is vitally important for the sake of your children to get to know all the pros and cons of homeschooling. You don’t want your family to plummet headfirst into a yawning chasm filled with sharpened stakes. It happens sometimes to well-intentioned parents who are woefully unprepared.
Let’s look at some of the cons first. After all, it is better to arm yourself and tread cautiously rather that striding along with your head held high thinking that homeschooling is rollicking good fun - it is, but only after you have weathered the all-important first year.
Homeschooling Con No. 1: You will have sleepless nights (Guaranteed!)
Don’t take this lightly. This is the number one reason why most homeschoolers quit. I am dead serious!
Trust me when I say that you will have sleepless nights in the first year. In fact, every homeschooler in the world, unless she doesn’t have a heart beating in her chest, will suffer from chronic insomnia. And when you do finally fall asleep, it will be to wake up sweating and feverish from a horrible nightmare where your child is an illiterate, homeless beggar rummaging for food in trashcans.
The good news is that this debilitating condition is only temporary. Many parents chicken out and dash to the nearest public school the next day.
But you don’t want to do that. Your unconscious mind, which loves to run on autopilot, hates it when you nonchalantly walk out of your comfort zone. Nightmares are your mind’s way of warning you that you are dabbling in something that might be potentially dangerous.
If you grit your teeth and endure this psychological warfare your mind is conducting against you, you will finally be victorious. Don’t worry; it will not be another Vietnam.
As long as you conscientiously homeschool your kids to the best of your ability, your unconscious mind will eventually raise the white flag. And that is a guarantee.
Your homeschooling life will be much happier after your two minds have kissed and made up. It is a Cinderella story after all.
Well, almost. I am not finished yet. I have a mind-boggling 100 pros and cons of homeschooling for your perusal. I have all the angles covered for you. And have I mentioned that it is free?
