Boy bullies are more prevalent than girl bullies. The difference is that while boy bullies utilize a direct approach – that is, use their fists – girl bullies take a more indirect approach by creating rumors and belittling others. This is born out by the fact that 46% of males have been involved in a physical fist fight.
Bullying facts reveal that 77% of boys and bullying encompasses verbal and physical abuse. In addition, 28% of boys have been caught with weapons on school grounds. Boys and bullying in schools often include threats which are carried out to fruition after school, away from the school perimeter.
Some bullying facts which pose immediate threats to victims include hitting, punching, kicking, taunting, use of racial slurs and sexual name calling. Those most vulnerable to boy bullies are boys who may have a noticeable disability, keep to themselves, appear insecure and non-assertive, have little athletic prowess, appear weak, become easily upset, and seem to have a better connection with teachers than their peers.
While the aforementioned reasons behind boys and bullying are difficult to understand, the following reasons are downright sickening: Studies indicate that those who have trouble concentrating on schoolwork, seem restless or become easily hypertensive, are immature for their age, seem to have a problem getting along with teachers, or who are boys who fight back or are easily angered, are the prime targets of boy bullies.
Boy bullies, in particular, have an edge over girl bullies. The power they feel increases their need to continue bullying others. Whether due to size or physical strength, boy bullies are an unfortunate product of a society that dictates that the male species is dominant, macho, and more often than not can solve problems in unorthodox ways.
Here is a case in point. A father was called to a middle school because his son committed a sexual act with a young sixth grade girl. His comment to the charge was, "Way to go, son!"
While boy bullies do not normally attack girls verbally, they do engage in sexual activity which can be considered a by-product of the bullying tactic. Middle school boys and girls do have sex. This is an undeniable fact. It is yet to be determined whether one can consider this to be an act of aggression, as it relates to boys and bullying. Although boy bullies remain dominant in public schools, they fear nothing. When caught in the act of bullying a defenceless boy, they revel in the attention.
Boy bullies can create more havoc in the classroom by their disruptive behavior. They know all about suspension rules and hearing processes, and will go as far as they can without crossing that barrier. They will harass and taunt their victims in bathrooms, school yards, school buses and train stations, and will follow their victims home.
A boy bully will amass a larger crowd when confronting a victim for the sole purpose of beating him with his fists. Although there have been incidents where steel bars and bats have been used, these boy bullies are relentless in proving just how powerful they are, and thus they create a web of fear unparalleled in schools today.
