Testicular cancer is said to be an illness which is caused due to malignant or cancerous cells in both or one testicles. Testicles also known as gonads or testes are nothing but a pair of sex glands of men. They are involved in the production and storage of sperm. They are also the major source of male hormones or testosterone. The hormones are found to be responsible for the growth and development of sex or reproductive organs and physical characteristics in men. The testes are situated beneath the penis inside the scrotum which resembles a sac looking similar to a pouch.
Some of the common testicular cancer symptoms and signs include swelling of the testicles, presence of lump that is not painful, discomfort felt in the scrotum or testicles, pain or dull ache in the testicles or scrotum, testicles seen in the enlarged state, change in the way the testicles look, heaviness felt in the scrotum, dull pain felt in the groin region or lower abdomen and so on. But it should be kept in mind that the above testicular cancer symptoms and signs can also be the signs and symptoms of other diseases related to the reproductive organs that the person experiencing them should immediately consult the doctor and get it checked thoroughly.
Normally the affected person is the first one to notice the testicular cancer symptoms and signs first during self examination. But the physicians or doctors apart from checking the person physically might also suggest him to undergo various diagnostic tests and laboratory tests including blood tests, ultrasound scans and biopsy. Once the presence of testicular cancer is found then the physician might ask the person to undergo few more tests to find out if the disease has spread from the place of origin to other parts of the body. This helps them to find out the stage of the disease and also helps them to device a treatment plan appropriately.
Treatments that are commonly used for treating testicular cancer and their signs and symptoms include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or a combination of the above. The treatment methods might result in side effects which depends greatly on the kind of treatment given to the person and also might differ greatly depending on every individual. Out of all the treatment methods used for treating testicular cancer, surgery is found to be very effective among many and especially in people who are in their early stages of the disease. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are normally given to patients after surgery to avoid recurrence of the disease and to prevent it from spreading to the nearby organs.
