Are Some Sex Positions Exclusive to the Young?

Betty White is my libido hero.

She’s quoted in this month’s AARP Magazine as saying, "Sexual desire is like aging — a lot of it is up here." Meaning it’s in your head.

So you’re only as old as you think you are. And your libido is only as large as you want it to be.

I like that. And knowing that you’re never too old for sex.

I have a while to go before I’m as old as Betty White. Another 44 years. But I do think about how my sex life will change as I get older. And how both my husband and I will have to adjust to those changes.

And of all the issues that may (ahem) arise as we age, from erectile dysfunction to a decrease in vaginal lubrication, the musculoskeletal changes in our bodies, such as arthritis and loss of flexibility and strength, are the ones that concern me the most.

While I’m no acrobat, I do think that variety in the bedroom is important. It’s not unheard of for a couple to switch positions a few times in a love-making session.

So it will be even more important in the next 10 to 20 years to keep up my strength and endurance. I’m sure I’ll be doing my best to help stave off aging by staying fit and eating healthy. The same things that I do now.

But you can’t stop time and at some point getting older is going to catch up with me. And the likeliest places? My back, my hips, or my knees.

A couple of sex positions that may be hard on our aging bodies:

Standing up in the shower: But you could install a grab bar in there so you don’t slip. That’s a bad visual. You could also get one of those shower benches so when your knees or your partner’s start to hurt, you can take a seat.

Doggy style: Again, those darn knees. A bed wedge could help here by raising up your hips and taking some of the pressure off of your knees.

Missionary position: Back problems could make this position a thing of the past. But you could try a modified missionary position to take pressure off of your back by putting your legs on your partner’s shoulders. Flexibility is key.

People are living longer these days and it’s become clear that even as we age, we are still sexual beings and that the continued fostering of intimacy is important.

Staying sexually active and enjoying that connection with your partner can help you feel younger. You’re only as old as you think you are.

How do you think aging will affect your sex life?
