When parenting teenagers, it can often seem like there is hardly any common ground. It may seem like your cooperative eager to please child turned surly and rebellious overnight. Other teenagers simply stop talking to their parents. To deal with parenting teenagers, you sometimes have to develop some new strategies, and we will look at a few of these here.
When it comes to parenting teenagers, one mistake many parents make is losing control. Losing control when you are upset with your teen only reinforces the same behavior in your teen rather than showing you are the adult. Whether you realize it or not many of these behaviors are simply cries for guidance. When you feel angry or confused, take a deep breath and try not to react. Getting some distance from the situation when possible is a good idea. Wait until you are rational before you resume the discussion. Parenting teenagers requires that you remain the mature party when interacting with your kids. It is most important when parenting teenagers that you set a good example for them. This may seem obvious but you might be surprise how many parents don't practice what they preach. If you are drinking, smoking or getting high and trying to tell your teens not to, you can bet they will do it anyway. You've probably experienced the parrot effect of your teens, they say what you say regardless of whether or not you've told them not to. So set the example you want them to follow.
Make sure to spend quality time with them. As you know this can be harder than it sounds because of a variety of different reasons. For one thing you probably have a very busy schedule and you've likely noticed that your teen is with friends more than not now. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't make time for them. This is a natural occurrence for teenagers to feel the need to break away but you should still make a point of telling them you still care and showing them the guidance and reassurance they may need. When you don't make the effort to spend time with them you are at risk of having them block you out and it's difficult to get past that block once it's been put into place. Being the parent of a teenager means working hard to keep the relationship alive which means making sacrifices of your time for them.
In general, parenting teenagers is not always easy, but you can improve any situation with the right kind of communication. Parenting the teenager will also take compromise and patience too. Parenting teenagers can be made easier with this information.
