Manage Your Metabolism - Kick Your Body Into Gear

Metabolism is a buzz word in our diet crazy world, it's often given as an explanation, muttered about among women in lunch rooms watching miss size six gulp down an enormous plate of fast food, or even used as an excuse to avoid the journey to better eating habits. While we all know its impact do we really know what it does, and more importantly how we can change it?

Metabolism is actually the countless chemical processes going on continuously inside your body to make it function. These processes are fueled by energy from food, and in turn they monitor how much energy output that same food produces.

Your personal metabolic rate is decided by several things including body size, age (metabolism slows with age to hormonal and neurological changes in your body), gender, genetics, and possibly most importantly the amount of body fat that you have, and also your dietary health. Although you can't change your, gender or genetic makeup you can affect your metabolism through healthy eating, and changing your fuel is the best way to shift your metabolism up a gear and into the fast lane!

First Gear: Eating Protein is a great base for your diet and eating it regularly will keep your body burning calories, and keep your glycemic index low. Lean red meat, poultry and fish are all good sources of protein but so are beans eggs and lots of green vegetables such as spinach and cabbage, so why not swap your regular for some green fuel this week?

Second Gear: Raw green vegetables clean your blood, tissues, cells, and organs, and help your body flush out harmful chemicals that may have been clogging up your metabolism, give yourself a rolling start and go straight into second gear with some fresh raw cabbage.

Third Gear: Drink as much water as you can. We've heard it all before and we know it's true, water is necessary for every process in your body and your metabolism is no exception. Water helps in your body's detoxification process and almost has the same effect as an oil change on the smoothness of your engine, so keep up the maintenance by carrying a water bottle with you, you might be surprised by how much you drink.

Fourth Gear: As contradictory as it may sound, fats burns fat! Good fats such as olive oil, nuts, seeds and avocados help to burn off your bad fats. They also help to lower cholesterol and blood sugar, so a small amount in your daily diet will keep you feeling as hot as a Ferrari.

Fifth Gear: Go out and eat the freshest rawest foods you can find! Processed food is handy but it doesn't have the same vitamins minerals and enzymes that are easy work for your metabolism to process. What's more research shows that a significant factor in slow metabolism is dietary deficiency in vitamins and minerals so try as much living and label free food as you can to get you speeding down the motorway of life.
