Watching porn with your partner can add some spice to your sex life, but it may not be a good idea for everyone.

So, can couples porn improve your sex life? Or will watching sex videos compromise intimacy by desensitizing those who watch it?

"It's a question of intensity, degree, frequency, and type," declared Sandra Leiblum, PhD, a sex therapist and director of psychological services at the New Jersey Center for Sexual Wellness in Bedminster. "It can also enhance arousal and interest and be a boon for couples who are having trouble achieving arousal. But if one partner engages in porn viewing for an extended time and ignores the other partner because the material is so exciting or captivating, then it's a detriment. It's all in how porn is used."

Very frequently it can be difficult and awkward to suggest to your partner you’re interested in watching a sex video together because it give you big pleasure and arose your sex drive. If you decide it's something you want to try, use your imagination to think of ways you might mention the subject. For example, you could rent a mainstream movie that contains a slightly explicit sex scene, and use that as a conversation starter. Or you might bring up couples porn when you're cuddling and sharing secrets or fantasies.

Keep in mind that your partner might be initially reluctant to watch a sex video with you. Sometimes, this hesitation is based on a fear of being unfavorably compared to the actors in the sex video. One response to this concern is to explain that the porn stars involved are actors and like Hollywood stars, they're not expected to look or act like everyday people, but instead portray ideals likely to prompt arousal.

The most important thing to keep in mind about porn videos is that different things turn on different people. More specifically, men and women often have varying preferences when it comes to sexual imagery.

When you're shopping for a sex video to share with your partner, keep these possible gender differences in mind that men tend to be aroused by visual images. Erotic videos and photos have been shown to prompt arousal in men in a nearly automatic fashion. Provocative magazines or sex videos tend to be designed to encourage this response.

Women, on the other hand, respond more to verbal stimuli. Either written or spoken, explicit words can prompt a strong sexual response in women. Romance novels full of steamy scenarios are an example of erotic material that typically targets and arouses many women.

Couples porn is meant to be a fun sexual aid that can be mutually shared and enjoyed. So, sex videos can be a great way to spice up your sex life. But make sure both you and your partner are willing participants and don't become dependent on sex videos every time you make love.
