Local UK communities are taking action against unruly motorbike riders. A public meeting was recently held in Bridge of Cally to address the causes of motorbike accidents in a bid to reduce the number of accidents on the notorious roads north of the town.
The meeting was organised by local councillor Caroline Shiers, who planned the meeting to coincide with the end of the summer, which is peak riding period on the popular road. The meeting provided locals with a platform to express their concerns and opinions about motorcyclists’ behaviour on the road over the past few months.
Ms. Shiers believes the problem of road misuse by motorcyclists needs to be addressed. "This route takes motorcyclists through Glen Shee and on the road between Bridge of Cally and Pitlochry. Whilst the majority of these bikers are respectful of the road conditions and other motorists, there are some who are not and ride with a lack of regard for their safety and those of other road users."
According to local police, five bikers lost their lives and a further 38 were seriously injured in the area last year, despite efforts by the local police to target irresponsible drivers with ‘Operation Rossi’. Representatives from the local police force were present at the meeting to provide input regarding their plans to reduce road traffic collisions and address illegal and anti-social riding behaviour.
Road users were also educated on the correct way to deal with unruly motorcyclists during the meeting. The representatives pointed out that motorists need to be more considerate towards motorcyclists on the roads and continue to practice caution at all times.
Chief constable Justine Curran said, "Unfortunately we have had some real issues with motorcyclists recently and there have been some fatal accidents. It is important that we deal with illegal and anti-social cycling behaviour."
The meeting proved to be a success and facilitated two-way communication between locals and authorities. Suggestions were provided by both parties to work towards safer road usage for motorcyclists and motorists alike.
