Sunless tanning products by popular brands like Sun Laboratories have become extremely popular. Acquiring that superb bronze hued tan has become an integral part of our attitude. We no longer consider it to be a cosmetic indulgence. With people becoming more and more aware of the harmful after-effects caused by the UV radiations of sunlight, getting a tan with the help of tanning products is becoming more and more common. There are several prestigious brands like Sun Laboratories, who have come up with excellent products which help in providing that very coveted tan, you always dreamt of sporting.
How Do These Products Work?
If you are planning to use a Sun Laboratories product or any other make for tanning purposes, it's always wise to try and understand how these products actually work. The skin is made up of two layers, the outer epidermal layer and the inner dermis. The epidermis is the area which is affected. The outermost layer of the epidermis is known as stratum corneum or horny layer. Artificial tanners affect this layer alone.
These cosmetic tanners contain a substance called DHA or dihydroxyacetone. DHA is basically a colorless sugar. The sugar comes in contact with the dead skin cells of the stratum corneum and the color change occurs. This is the tan. The tan lasts for a period of 5 to 7 days post application. As the dead skin cells are sloughed away, the tan fades gradually and needs to be refurbished.
Essential Tips
When you start using sunless tanning products from Sun Laboratories or other established brands, there are some essential factors to be kept in mind. A guarded approach always ensures better results. Some such important do's and don'ts while using Sun Laboratories' artificial tanners are as follows:
-
It is always advisable not to shave or wax your legs or arms several hours prior to applying the product for an artificial tan. Although some can get away with it, its best avoided especially if you have a sensitive skin.
-
It is a common knowledge that you need to exfoliate your skin before you can actually apply such products. This facilitates an even tone throughout. But, you should use a soft cotton cloth for exfoliation purposes, rather than a rough loofah which can cause streaks. Use one which contains polyethylene as an active ingredient.
-
A sponge paintbrush is ideal for applying the product on your back. This ensures even application. It is always better to use a sponge brush with a wooden handle as plastic handles can scratch your back.
-
Use snug, dark colored garments when you apply these lotions or sprays. Using the same garment every time will assure the best of results. Ideally, you should have a pair specifically for this purpose.
-
Avoid sprays if you are a first timer. It's difficult to attain an even tone with sprays. You can spray on to a sponge roller or brush and then apply it on your skin. However, lotions are better if you are applying for the first time.
