Having a savings account is something that most people like to have around for emergencies or the future. Those who have extra money at the end of the month prefer to put the money in a savings account where it can earn some interest instead of putting it in a place where it could be lost like the stock market. Finding a savings plan might seem like an easy task, but there are some things that you should consider before placing your hard earned money in a savings account.
Your options begin with the big name banks. These banks give you the opportunity to go in and talk to the folks inside the bank when you open your account. This gives you a good way to deposit money easily and cash your checks whenever you choose. These banks, however, may not have the best interest rates available to you.
A direct saving account is one that is available completely online or by telephone. These banks do not have branches in your local neighborhood, but they offer some good advantages. Because the costs are low to the bank, the interest rates paid to customers is higher. The amount that you can make with one of these accounts can be considerably higher than a traditional bank.
Your next decision is the type of account you plan to open. There are two different types of accounts that you can open for savings. The first type is a regular savings account and the other is a deposit savings. A regular savings account, you will have to make regular deposits to your account every month. You may be able to deposit more than the set amount every month, but you are likely to miss interest payments if you fall below the minimum savings. The deposit account does not have these types of restrictions on the amount that you must deposit. The regular savings account does offer higher interest rates, but you lose the flexibility of a deposit savings account.
Your interest rates also depend on the amount of access you have to the account. If you choose an account that allows you access to your funds without limitation, you are likely to get a lower interest rate than an account that limits your access. Some accounts may require you to give a specific amount of notice before making a withdrawal.
The type of account that you choose depends on the amount of flexibility you need with your funds. More restrictions equals better interest rates and more flexibility will lower your interest. If you think you may need more access to your funds choose the account that gives you the flexibility that you need.
