When producing ethnic skintones on reborn dolls whether utilizing a kit or reborning a factory painted doll, the process is relatively the same. If employing a 'play' doll it is crucial to strip and sand your kit, running hot water into the limbs to eliminate any wax layers, this will permit the dye to take hold.
Asian skintones is the same procedure as creating a Caucasian baby, just dissimilar colour mixes are required. Primary preparation, depending on the colour of your kit may be vital in the form of a dye. If your kit is too pink it is advised to do a ten minute purple dye to tone it down a little, ready for your asian paint mix. Submerge the doll kit into a liquid dye for ten minutes. take it out and leave to dry for at least 24 hours before examining the colour, this gives the dye plenty of time to take hold in the vinyl and will bestow you a more precise hint on the colour. Once happy with the colour of your kit, take a small amount of flesh 04 and a larger amount of flesh 06 and combine with your unscented solvent or thinning medium until you have a waterlike consistency. You can experiment with this colour a bit until you are happy that it is the right shade for an asian skintone.
The African American skin tone for reborn baby dolls is a simple process, with the initial preparation being essential to the overall result. Starting with your water soluble dye add 4 parts tan, 2 part dark brown, with the least amount of yellow to 5 parts water. This is the standard mixture used for staining your kit before using thin layering of heat set paints. Depending on the darkness of skin tone you are aiming to make, your kit can be left in the solution for 10 to 30 minutes depending on the depth of color you wish to get. For African American it is suggested to take away after 15mins, the process can be repeated if your not happy with the depth of color. After removal from your dye mix rinse cautiously and dry, leave your pieces 24hours to cure before making any decisions on darkening, this will give the dye time to really take hold in the vinyl and give you an exact idea on color.
For a light Hispanic skin, Using a water based or water soluble dye, mix 1 part dark brown to 4 parts water in a pitcher or similar to submerge your doll body parts. Vinyl will float so it is crucial to lay something on top of the water or gently wedge something into the pieces so they are fully submerged for the period of dyeing. Depending on what tone of skin you are intending to achieve, dye time can be anywhere from 10 minutes to 30 minutes. Take out your parts from the blend after ten minutes and rinse thoroughly, leave to cure for at least 24 hours before formulating any decisions on colour, you will need this time for the colour to settle and can always do a second dip, as with most reborning, less is more, you can always darken later, lightening is a time consuming procedure of stripping or colour harmonising.
