With Christmas coming up fast, many people are considering how to buy all the gifts needed without spending too much money. For most people, money has been tight in the last few years due to the worldwide financial crisis. As more and more stores are closing, many people are turning to the internet to find that perfect gift for their loved ones. But what are the benefits and drawbacks of shopping in this way?

One of the disadvantages of shopping online is that you cannot touch, try on or as easily exchange the goods you buy. While for a lot of products like CDs, DVDs etc online shopping makes it easier to hear samples or view trailers, buying clothes or shoes can be a bit of a gamble. Whatever shoe or clothing size you fit (or whatever size fits the person you are shopping for) is sure to vary between brands, and online you just can't know if the product will fit perfectly and comfortably or not. Of course, most stores allow you to return clothes and shoes, but with limited time before Christmas, this may not be possible and it also incurs extra shipping costs and time.

If you are shopping for music, electronic goods or movies, online is surely the way to go. If you know your cousin loves country, or your sister loves romantic comedies, you can view trailers and listen to samples online, whereas in stores you just have to judge by covers. Because most online stores are based out of town in low-rent areas and often locate themselves in places with favorable tax or export regulations, they are able to offer cheaper prices and also buy in bulk and can keep larger amounts of stock available than your regular mall or department store. Chasing that last toy for the kids? Surfing online is much more convenient than hurrying around a whole range of busy stores. Whether you want iPods, laptops or digital cameras, online shopping is advantageous in these areas.

The ideal solution, if you have time, is to visit stores to get a feel for the products or even try things on, then see if you can save money online. If you have an iPhone or other internet-ready portable device, you can even compare prices right from the store using online comparison sites to see if you can save money on that product. If you can, order securely online and enjoy the shipping right to your door. If not, simply buy from stores and support local businesses wherever possible. This perfect combination should ensure a cheap, stress-free and happy Christmas!
