There are hard ways to do things and there are easy ways. If you want the easy way to organize your closet then read on. All you need are a few tips that will take care of the majority of any clutter and organization. Then you will have a clean and tidy closet forever more.
You closet can be organized a handful of ways. The first is to color code all your clothes. This is a great default if you are not sure which way to go. It is also really fashion oriented, as it will help you to assemble fantastic outfits really easily. If you want to run wild with this idea you can even get different colored hangers for each section of your clothing. You can also organize your clothes by season, if you are in a climate where this is valid. If you have a few really defined jobs in your life that each require certain types of attire you may want to consider grouping your clothes this way. One more choice is to group every thing by its function. So sweaters with sweaters, pants with pants and shorts with shorts. This is very basic but really helpful if you are trying to find something.
After sorting all the hanging items it's time to look after the folded things. Jeans, sweaters and other casual clothes make the perfect candidates to go on shelves if you have limited hanging space. Fold all like clothes into piles making sure that they are all about the same size and that anything that is bigger goes on the bottom. These piles can most easily be managed by putting them into shallow baskets or plastic bins. There are also canvas sorters that you can get at many home textile stores. These work well for creating categories of items and to keep them separated from each other. Place everything on your shelves making the things you use the most easily accessible. The extra stuff that you use once in a while can go on the floor, on the bottom shelf or even on the top shelf out of the way. To sort out any remaining items like belts and scarves designate a specific hanger, hooks or bin for these items and these items alone. They should only be mixed in with everything else if they are associated with a specific outfit.
The last area of your closet to be organized is the top shelf, which is often unused, and the floor, which is often cluttered, and full of junk. Why is it easier for us to put things on the floor rather then reach up? The floor is a great space to use, but don't use it randomly. Specify the purpose of each section by using a box, bin or bag and specifying what that area is for. I have a sock box at the bottom of my closet, as I wear them infrequently and yet still need a space for them. If you don't yet have a place for your dirty clothes then you will want to put a laundry hamper here too. You can use a traditional laundry bin or anything that is the right shape for your closet. As for the top shelf this space is perfect for the things that you only use once a year or very infrequently. Put things into clear plastic bins so you can easily find them and so that the dust stays off the actual clothes. Bedding is another thing that goes really well on the top shelf of any closet. Another suggestion is to keep two handy bags in your closet, one for give aways that you don't wear any more and the other for items that can't be worn without special attention.
Your new creation is now all in place. To keep it that way make sure to take a photo, write it on your well or your mirror so that you keep it as clean as it is now. Easier said then done??? Well the truth is all you need to do is make a decision that you are creating a new habit. Once ingrained you will need not do any more. That is the beautiful thing about habits; after you instate them they then work for you!
