Baby proofing a home is a very important aspect that should be considered in home improvements and in building a home. You don't realize how important it is until you have a baby at home. For newly weds and expectant parents, baby proofing is one of the most important things that must not be ignored in the preparation for the baby's arrival.
There are many things and areas at home that we think are safe. But with a curious baby, anything at home can be a potential danger especially when he learns to crawl or walk. You can't watch your baby the whole time, and even if you do, babies are very unpredictable. You'll never know what they'll try to reach next and they love to wander around. With their young minds, they don't know yet what things are safe and not.
Safety is one of the things that must be prioritized in home arrangements and improvements. Visit all the rooms at home, from the living room, kitchen, bedroom and even the garage. Try to anticipate everything that can be harmful to the baby and think of ways on how you can rectify them.
Most of the baby's activities are done in the living room and the nursery. Make sure all the hard corners and sharp edges in the room and of the furniture are padded to prevent the baby from hitting against them. Use baby proof latches or locks on the doors leading to other room and never use rubber stoppers because it can be a choking hazard to the baby.
The baby's crib must be placed away from the windows and place a rug around it. All the small objects that can be a choking hazard, medicines, alcohols or chemicals in the room must be kept in a cabinet with locks or keep them out of reach. Heavy objects and furniture must not topple in case the baby pulls it or climbs onto it. Unplug the wires and seal all the sockets as the babies are very curious, they might try to explore them.
Gates are very important to deny the child's access to other rooms such as the kitchen and staircase. For the staircases, make sure to install safety gates on the top and the bottom. You don't have to chase your child the whole time. You can confine him to a safe area at home where he can safely roam around with the use of safety gates.
Babies and children tend to be accident prone. It is essential that the parents must be keen in spotting everything that can be a potential danger to the baby and in taking immediate action to prevent the accidents from happening.
