If you've been around this business very long, you probably are familiar with the usage of the phrase longtail keyword.Research is an important part of choosing keywords and certainly should include the longtail keyword phrases. Has it crossed your mind to question the importance of the longtail keyword and if you can beneficially use it in your application(s)?
Search engines have evolved considerably since the days of one word keywords. There were just too many results for anyone to effectively find what the user was specifically looking for. The search engines as well as the user has become more laser like in their quest to meet in the information search and find procedures. Users have become more specific in searches and the search engines have also done their part in providing information in more targeted information by utilizing phrases instead of single words.
This has resulted in fewer results because they are more targeted and specifically more in tune with what both are searching for. The user can better search to find certain information and also enables the search engines to better provide that information. This has greatly enhanced niche marketing because the longtail keyword (phrases) has enabled the user to be more detailed in their description of what they are searching for and provider also enabled to be more detailed in providing that information. This makes the information provider to rank higher in the search engines and more easily found as the search has narrowed considerably.
Keyword research is something so often overlooked in importance by most marketers. If one paid attention to the word itself, one should know better. Notice the word itself. Keyword is self-explanatory. By definition It is important. It is vital to your success in providing the information and in searching for the information. Keyword research must not be under estimated. Even so, it is overlooked much of the time and not just by newbies. I think most people think of themselves as ordinary people and think they know what words other ordinary people would use to search for something. While there is some truth and reasonable thinking with that, there is also the competition factor one must consider. You have not accomplished much if you use the most common keyword that is used to describe the information someone might be looking for and 50 million competitors have also used that keyword. It is extremely hard to get ranked high enough for anyone to ever find you with that phrase.
If you used a very broad topic, such as golf, you would not go very far with it as a keyword. If you narrowed the niche to left hand golfers, golf putting, golf driving or golf for women you may find longtail keywords you can rank for. There are many keyword tools one can use. The most common free keyword tools that I use is Google AdWords tool and Traffic Travis. Traffic Travis also has a paid version, but you can do well with the free version.
The idea is to be more definitive and specific. Look for phrases that have a reasonable amount of competition that you can rank for as well as your niche. It may narrow your audience, but you will get searched more often. This is particularly true if you have a low-budget and need to get established early. Once again, use the keywords tools. You need to know what others are doing. In closing, I wish I had really paid attention to this advice when it was given to me.
