With a wide variety of orchid species available with distinctive colours, sizes and blooms, we have seen this vibrant plant become a household favourite. An important factor for maintaining the health of your indoor orchid is understanding that when watering orchids, the amount of water needed will depend on the type of orchid you have.

Some tips in watering orchids

  1. Take time to research the correct requirements for watering orchids, with regards to the type of orchid specie you own, or you are about to purchase.

  2. Like other plants that require specific requirements, your orchids growth will thrive when the correct methods are used.

  3. Supplying your orchids with constant water will provide consistent humidity for them. The easiest way for you to do this is by purchasing a deep saucer with some pebbles.

  4. Remember when placing the pebbles in the saucer, be sure that the orchid pot doesn't make contact with the water surface.

  5. It’s important to remember when watering orchids, it’s best to thoroughly soak the potting mixture, wait until the surface is fairly dry before watering further.

  6. A common mistake with growers is mistaking dry potting soil as a sign the plant requires watering. Note the potting bark, even though it may appear dry, you’ll often find the bark inside maintains moisture.

  7. As a good rule of thumb, water your orchid about once a week, or once every two weeks depending on the specie of orchid you own.

In parts of the world that receive high levels of rainfall such as tropical climates, orchid plants can be commonly found in these areas. These natural habitats are subjected to higher levels of humidity reaching up to eighty percent in some parts. As for people, we couldn’t maintain comfortable lifestyles in these conditions, so to maintain healthy vibrant orchids at home we need to seek other methods to mimic the orchids natural environment.

When orchids are found in their native habitats, the roots are mostly dry before they are watered again. Some species of orchids can be found growing on the trunks of trees right up to the top of canopies.

Finding a good routine when it comes to watering and fertilizing your orchids is essential for maintaining optimal orchid health. Like other plants orchids also need fertilizer, but only in mild quantities and applied sparingly. Purchasing fertilizer is as simple as dropping in to your local nursery or garden shop. Keep these tips in mind and you’ll see your orchid plant thrive throughout the season.
