When buying organic beauty products, the following adage is appropriate: let the buyer beware. That's because there isn't a mandated standard for what qualifies as "organic" in the beauty industry. As a result, not all organic products are natural. On the upside, advocacy groups have developed a rating system to help consumers with their organic beauty purchases. Below are tips you should keep in mind to ensure that you are truly buying organic products.
Tip #1: Products that are over 95 percent organic have a label that reads "organic," and products with 70 percent organic ingredients have a label that reads "contains organic ingredients." Keep those facts in mind when reading labels.
Tip #2: Check the package for a certified organic stamp. Natural Products Association (NPA) has certified hundreds of products thus far. But since they haven't gotten around to inspecting every product on the market, you cannot always rely on their seal. However, it's a great starting point, especially for a beginner buyer of organic beauty products.
Tip #3: Commercial beauty products normally have the following ingredients: mineral oil, petroleum, paraffin, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA), sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), formaldehyde (formalin), alcohol, collagen, lanolin, talc, and lacquer. So when you are researching organic products, read the labels carefully to make sure these ingredients are not mentioned on the label.
Tip #4: Organic beauty products can be scented or unscented. Either is acceptable. That said, the fragrances should come from natural elements. So before you purchase an organic product, check the label for artificial fragrances and/or dyes. If the label mentions the use of artificial elements, then the product isn't 100 percent natural.
The purchase of organic products has risen significantly year after year. This is due to several reasons: (1) organic beauty products leave the user with soft, silky, and youthful skin; (2) the ingredients in commercial products seep into the user's bloodstream, causing potential damage; and (3) many people are cognizant of the animal cruelty involved in making commercial products. Since organic products are cruelty-free, the products feel good both on your skin and your conscience.
Unfortunately, to seize the opportunity for profit, a lot of companies are trying to pass off unnatural products are organic. This is where your due diligence comes into play. Please thoroughly read each label before making a purchase. Taking the time to read what you are buying will ensure you are purchasing a truly organic product.
