It is a common complaint by pregnant and nursing women. "Nursing lingerie is boring!" And why would you want to spend money on something that incites such a response when you could spend it on the endless array of gorgeous items vital to the arrival and well being of your baby?

It’s all very well to check prams, bassinets, baby toys, sterilisers, lace-trimmed linen, all-in-ones, nursery mobiles and so forth off your ever growing list – the choice is phenomenal and it’s easy to get caught up in it. Believe me, as a mother of three young girls and the owner of an internationally renowned nursing lingerie company, I recall this frenzied state well! However, the day will come when you realise that you are constantly readjusting your bra straps, you’re huffing and puffing and your lingerie feels tight. This is the signal that it’s now time to do something for you! As the person at the centre of this incredible journey, taking time out for yourself is imperative and as women, we know that small things make a big difference. Small things being babies and lingerie!

With the first of my pregnancies, I most certainly did find the nursing lingerie boring – it drove me to start my own maternity lingerie company. So rest assured, there is now beautiful feminine pregnancy and nursing lingerie available. It comes in a myriad of different styles and sizes. It comes in exquisite fashion forward collections which challenge any misconceptions you may have previously had regarding lingerie designed specifically for pregnancy and nursing. It comes in shapewear, special occasion, every day, cute, sophisticated, romantic and sensual and practical styles. There is no longer any reason to put nursing lingerie at the bottom of your check list! You must feel comfortable, have a beautiful silhouette and make use of the specific design features included in nursing lingerie which will alleviate any discomfort you may have by continuing to struggle along in your ever-expanding regular lingerie.

So what should you look for then? Now that "nursing lingerie" has crept higher up your check list, make sure you schedule a good hour or more to visit a lingerie boutique in order to be carefully measured by a professional. Choose from ¾ cup or full, side sling support or A-frame. Ensure the bras you choose have six rows of hooks and eyes to accommodate the size fluctuation of your ribcage. There is no need to select maternity lingerie with underwire as during pregnancy and breastfeeding, underwire can block milk ducts and put pressure on tender tissue and lead to infections such as mastitis. Shoulder straps should be wider if you have a heavier bust and also be cotton lined for comfort. Choose nursing lingerie - both bras and nightwear – with one-handed maternity clips for fuss free feeds but above all make sure it’s gorgeous and makes you feel that way too!
