It all started when I had this browsing a while ago, then I read one article saying that women seem to have not contributed much in the field of science. The author said that it is dominated by men. It may be true that most of the famous scientists are men, but I think I cannot agree with the statement that "women made no much contribution in the field of science." You know why? It is because there is Naturalist Joy Adamson in the first spot. She is the author of the best seller book "Born Free" which then converted into a movie of the same title. Everybody then loves Joy Adamson because of her love for Elsa (a lioness). She raised such a lion cub and magically turned it out to be a kind-hearted animal. The truth is that Joy Adamson is not like those typical scientists in science lab coats, she preferred to travel and focus more on her voyage. In this case, she devoted her time in raising a lion cub named Elsa.
Another female scientist is Agnodice. Unlike Joy Adamson, Agnodice is not a traveller but a midwife with white science lab coats. In the times before, it is said that life used to give us some discriminations. That would include the fact that women then were prohibited to enter into the study of medicine. Because of this, she decided to have some disguising strategies in order for her to be admitted in the study of medicine. You know what she did? She clothed like a man and as such, she specialized midwifery as well as gynaecology. Wearing coats which are intended for men is actually a very risky thing to do but to Agnodice? It is not that of a risk. It is because she could do everything for something that she really loves to do. That must be the attitude of every scientist. As the old maxim says, "If you don’t want it, there are lots of excuses; if you want it, there are lots of ways." So, what she did is wear one of her coats even if he looks like male, and then pursue with her dream.
Who among you can ever forget of Dr. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson? She is the first female mayor of England and such a very noble English physician. Wearing coats are is actually the trademark of being a scientist but with Anderson, she dared to leave the typical description of a scientist. As such, she established institutions known as New Hospital for Women and then the London School of Medicine for Women. Regarding his being a science lab coats – person/ student, she had her education privately in London hospitals assisted by physicians there.
Those are only three of the various well-famed female scientists out there.
