The Golden Rule won’t give you a sunburn

I understand the Golden Rule to be: treat others as you wish to be treated.

This morning I received a call from a man who wanted to introduce me to a coaching program that I had filled out an interest card 4 years ago. I had put off calls 2 other times in the past week and when I received his call this morning I accepted out of guilt for putting the call off, and I could hear the annoyance in my voice. How ironic, given that I call at least 20-50 people a week to introduce them to the coaching program my company has to offer.

I had an urge to make an excuse and hang up, but instead I answered more honestly. As a salesperson, I related to the guy’s diligence in reaching me and his sincerity and genuineness as he explained his coaching program. I was turned on by what he was saying, yet I wasn’t interested in signing up for a coaching program. So, how would I handle that one, given that I usually don’t want people I’m calling to bruise my ego. I want everyone to say YES! Sign me up!! And, I hate when people make a flimsy excuse and hang up on me.

I told him the truth, why I was turned off 4 years ago, what I think sounds great about the program, and that I wanted to be affiliates as coaches. It sounded like his organization and ours are so aligned in missions and values and beliefs. I don’t know what the future would bring, but we’re now facebook and Linkedin "friends". I didn’t have to burn a bridge, and I believe that we and they have a partner in consciousness and growth for the world.
