It is important to make sure you backup your data in the event of network failure or loss. There are many cost-effective options available to businesses to take advantage of and preserve your data:
- External Hard Drives
An external hard drive is a hard drive that is fully enclosed and separate from a computer. They are self-powered and can act as a way to backup data. This is a safe option because of the fact that it can be disconnected from a computer and therefore is not vulnerable to problems from viruses and hardware/software failures. Especially nowadays, external hard drives as large as 2 terabytes can be purchased for under $200. A 1 terabyte hard drive can generally be purchased for under $100. This is generally enough storage space for most small to medium companies. There are other options available for companies that need more storage.
- Cloud-Based Storage
For companies who need to have access to their data in many locations, but also want to keep it backed-up off-site, cloud-based storage is an option. Most cloud-based storage companies charge a monthly subscription fee, which is based on the amount of storage required. The more storage required, the higher the fee. It is also important to make sure that the cloud-based storage provider is trusted and secure. The whole point of having an off-site cloud-based storage service is so that it will be secure. Inquire about their security and encryption. Make sure they have procedures in place in case of being hacked or other issues.
- Removable Media
Removable media like CDs, DVDs, Blu-Ray discs, and flash storage represent another back-up possibility for companies that are looking to protect their data. Blu-Ray writeable discs can hold up to 50 gigabytes of information, but can only be read on a Blu-Ray drive. Flash drives can also be useful in backing up data. The cost of flash drives has rapidly dropped in past several years and ones that hold as much as 32 gigabytes can be purchased for under $50. Unlike optical media (CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray discs), flash drives can be used on any computer with a USB port.
- Network Drives
Some companies have their computers networked together and have the content on the computer hard drives networked and stored on a server. The content is then backed up through the network server and protected if any one computer crashes or gets a virus. If your company does not have a network in place already, it can an expensive procedure to implement, but could prevent even more costly data loss. On average, data loss can cost a company upwards of $100,000. A network system required the least amount of maintenance and can make overall business operations more efficient.
It is important to keep in mind all options when it comes to data storage solutions or data capture systems. They can help improve your business and the efficiency of your operations.
