Learning toys are designed and developed very carefully to achieve a particular task in the process of learning. The design, colour, pattern is based upon developing certain skills of your child. As toys can be used to develop your baby, it is important to take great care when choosing them. Whether you have a newborn baby, a three year old or a seven year old child, it can be difficult to decide between all the various learning toys available. Here are a few factors to take into consideration when looking to buy learning toys for your child.
Is the learning toy appropriate for your child’s age?
Babies less than six months old lack clear senses and have not yet developed motor skills. Learning toys that are used to develop hearing, sight and touch are thus appropriate for this age group. These toys include colourful blocks, soft books, soft toys, picture books and various other toys with a variety of colours and patterns. Older babies can play with larger toys such as building blocks, push and pull toys, stacking blocks and nesting cups. Once children have started speaking and drawing, they can then progress to learning toys that are more advanced such as puzzles. Most toys available are categorized according to the age for which they are designed, to help you decide what is appropriate.
Is the learning toy fun for your child?
This is very important! You need to purchase a learning toy that is going to be fun for the child to play with. A child will learn more from toys they enjoy playing with, because they will be engaged for a longer period of time, and more enthusiastic when playing with it. This means that you need to strike a balance between getting a challenging and getting a fun toy.
Is the learning toy suited to your child’s personal interests?
Find out what your child is most fascinated with – it could be music, sports, art or as they get older, an imaginary occupation such as being a teacher or doctor. Then, match the learning toys with your child’s personal interests, as they will tend to play with it more. If your child is independent and patient, learning toys will keep them entertained for hours on end. Learning toys that develop motor skills and encourage physical exercise such as a bike, trampoline or jump rope can be given to active children.
