So it has been a difficult day – at home, at school, at work.

Whatever the situation, getting a massage is a great way to relax, escape from stress, and relax your muscles from built-up tension. A good session effectively rejuvenates the mind and body. It is, however, a rather expensive means of leisure, so you want to maximize each session as much as possible. In case you have any apprehensions about this type of therapy or just don’t know what is expected of you, these suggestions are offered to help you achieve a successful session of massage.

Do arrive up to fifteen minutes early. This will allow you to sit quietly, enjoy a complimentary beverage, settle your mind and just relax. Your massage will be more therapeutic for your body and rejuvenating to the mind if you are in a calm state. If you begin your session with tense muscles and an elevated heart rate, much of your time will be spent simply settling into a restful state.

Do avoid eating for two to four hours before your scheduled appointment. Part of your session will be spent lying face-down on the table. The pressure placed on your back during this time may be uncomfortable with a full stomach. Consider the size of your most recent meal when deciding on the length of time it will take to digest prior to your appointment, as the digestive process can take up to four hours. If you have multiple treatments scheduled, bring a light snack such as a granola bar to snack on after your therapy.

Do review medical concerns with the massage facility. Although the salon usually collects a brief medical history prior to scheduling appointments, make sure to mention any medical concerns to your therapist before beginning. For more serious conditions, such as bone fractures, surgeries, skin allergies, or recent injuries, consult your doctor beforehand. If you are pregnant, many spas require written medical consent so make sure to bring this with you or check with the spa regarding their specific procedures.

Do decide what to wear while at the session according to personal preference. Most clients choose not to wear any clothing during the treatment. Alternatively, some clients are more comfortable with retaining their underwear. Either way, your body will remain discretely covered throughout the session and only specifically targeted areas will be temporarily exposed.

Do attempt to achieve a peaceful mental state for your massage session. Try to empty your mind of daily activities, mental to-do lists, and other stressors. You may find focusing on the soft music or rhythmic strokes helps empty your mind or you may prefer to daydream of an exotic locale.

Do start the session by taking a few deep breaths. Continue, during the treatment, to allow your breathing to fall into a steady rhythmic pattern. Focused breathing promotes relaxation and enhances the experience.

Do try to avoid tightening the muscles during treatment. This is counterproductive to the therapeutic goal of massage therapy. If the pressure is too firm, inform your therapist so adjustments can be made.

Do just relax and leave your muscles limp; don’t try to help your therapist in any way. Your limbs will be manipulated as necessary.

Do notify your therapist if you feel any pain. The pressure level may need to be adjusted or you might need to change your body position to a more comfortable one. There are many types of support pillows that can be utilized to position the body.

Do take some time to relax, stretch, and sit up. Do not get up from the table right after the massage is finished. This will allow you to regain control of your body without feeling faint.

Arrive early, relax, breathe and enjoy your little indulgence. With a little preparation, you are sure to have a memorable experience – enjoy!
