Massage therapy is recognized as a Complimentary Alternative Medice (CAM). The 2007 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), which included a comprehensive survey of CAM use by Americans, showed that approximately 38% of adults in the US use CAM. Tampa and Lutz residents have benefited much from CAM in the form of massage therapy.
Special conditions like chronic back pain, sciatica, sports injury, and even pregnancy each has a specific massage technique that can soothe and reduce unpleasant symptoms. For instance, deep tissue massage can help alleviate chronic back pain and sciatica. Deep tissue massage uses special tissue and tendon manipulation which relives the back of stiffness and pain.
Sports massage has been known to not actually treat injuries but rather, prevent them. Since sports massage has the ability to warm up muscles and prepare them for intense physical activities, getting one before engaging in any sport or physical activity goes a long way in terms of preventive measures against muscle injuries. Professional athletes employ the help of therapists on the day of any competition since getting this type of bodywork 10 to 15 minutes before engaging in games increases strength and one's range of motion.
Contrary to some beliefs, pregnant women too, can get massages; thus, the pregnancy massage. The prenatal massage is specifically designed to reduce or eliminate some pregnancy symptoms such as soreness, headaches, nausea, sleeplessness, and even depression.
While there are no established contraindications yet, it is safe to avoid having prenatal massage when you have a high risk pregnancy, or if you have a condition like pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH), or placental abruption. These conditions may put you at risk for preterm labor, and it's best to avoid prenatal massage to prevent any complications. If you also feel nauseous, or you have been experiencing morning sickness, getting a pregnancy massage may not be a good idea.
Women in their first trimester who have no known complications can get prenatal massages but anyone who's pregnant 7 months or more should no longer subject themselves to this therapy. There are too many risks even if pressure points on the hands and feet are completely avoided.
Massage clinics use a special table that supports the mother's growing stomach. Some tables have holes for the tummy (and sometimes, breasts), while some tables are simply at an inclined position. The prenatal massage works one half of the body first to keep the mother comfortable. Some parts of the body are avoided such as the feet, hands, and stomach to avoid premature labor. However, it may not be recommended for all. Some pregnancy conditions may prohibit the strokes used in a pregnancy massage so massage therapist make it a point to ask for a medical recommendation from the doctor first.
Ask a certified massage therapist about these therapeutic massage treatments in your area of Lutz, Tampa, Wesley Chapel and Carrollwood.
