Although this is one of the situations you would never want to happen to you, still it is useful to know what to do in case of accident.
An accident, no matter if it is a slight collision or a more serious situation, always creates diseases, not only when the accident takes place, but also later on, and it makes it sometimes necessary to ask a road accident consultant for help. The most expert drivers, or the ones that have been lucky enough not to experience an accident before, do not always know what to do when they have their first car accident, and risk to get into a panic even when the situation is not very serious. Here are some tips to face an accident in the best possible way.
First rule: try not to lose your head. It is true that even the calmest and the most self-controlled person in the world might lose his/her head, if s/he is involved in a serious accident, bit in these cases it is even more important to keep calm, to be able to understand the seriousness of the situation and behave in the best way. The first thing to do is signaling the accident to other drivers that might arrive through light signals. If the accident has caused injuries, you must help them and call for help, avoiding moving the cars, in order to permit the police to reconstruct the accident. If there are no injuries, it is not always necessary to call the police and, if it is possible, you have to move away the damaged vehicles. If you cannot move away the vehicles, or the road has been somehow damaged – for example there are slippery substances on the road – you have to call the road service, after signaling the incident.
Even when it is not necessary to call the police, the drivers have to exchange some details regarding their driver license, the vehicle registration, their insurance. If there are some witnesses (also the passengers can be considered as witnesses), you can ask them to write a statement to explain what happened. The details can be gathered with the agreed statement form, which must include information about the place and time of the accident and the drivers’ signatures. The form must be filled out in four copies, two for each driver, who have to deliver one copy to their own insurance company, making the claim for damages faster. If all the involved parties agree and fill out the agreed statement form, indeed, the "innocent" driver will soon get a refund from his/her own insurance company, which will be reimbursed by the company of the driver that has caused the accident. If drivers do not have the form, still they must gather the details regarding the place, the time and the day of the accident, the type and the number-plate of the cars, the insurance company, the name of the drivers and of the owners of the car, if it is not the same person, the description of the accident and the name of the witnesses and injuries, if there are any. Remember that you can fill out the agreed statement form also later on, but in any case all the involved parties must report the accident to their insurance company within three days after the accident.
