Many people pull out all the stops when they are creating their resumes. They might have them printed on embossed paper. They might use super creative fonts or include images on them. They might even include a headshot of themselves since someone told them that it could increase their chances of getting a job. But if your extravagant resume says nothing about you or how you could add value to the company you’re interested in, you’re simply wasting your time and effort.

An effective human resources resume doesn’t need tons of bells and whistles. It just needs to be well written and organized. It also needs to show your relevant job experience. So here are some tips that can help you write an effective resume:

• Always include a relevant career profile at the top of your resume. This brief summary should spotlight your skills and accomplishments. Besides your contact information, this section will be the one of first things that a hiring manager will see. Use this section to grab their attention and let them know why you're qualified for the job.

• Tailor your resume to the position you are applying for. You can do this by looking at the job description and requirements and showing how your experience relates to the position for which you are applying. Another thing you can do is list all relevant skills in the strength and expertise section of your resume.

• Don't just give a description of each of your jobs. Highlight your accomplishments at each of your jobs in the work experience section of your resume. This is a great way to sell yourself and give potential employers even more evidence that you would be a valuable asset for their company.

• Check your finished resume for errors. You’re an intelligent person. But if you submit a resume that is filled with typos and grammatical errors, potential employers might actually question your level of intelligence. If you're not sure about your resume, have a friend or family member look it over before submitting it. And whatever you do, don't rely on spell-check.
