Ferrets are lovable pets that are somewhat low maintenance. These pets become much more low maintenance if they are trained early on in their lives. Ferrets can be trained to do basic things. One of these is teaching them to use a litter box.

Ferrets are not as apt to use a litter box as cats are. Cats will search out their litter box when they need to relieve themselves. Ferrets, on the other hand, will use a box if they see one when they need to relieve themselves. If they don't see one they nearest corner will probably be the answer to their problem. All of this is after they have been trained.

It's best practice to not attempt to train your pet ferret to use one litter box. Several boxes will be needed in different corners, nooks, and crannies in the area that they will be allowed in. At first, using a smaller space with several boxes will work best. After you have some success with this you can expand the borders of the space.

Use a litter that is dust free to save everyone's respiratory system. In clean pans you can try placing a small amount of soiled litter in with the clean litter to prevent your little buddy from using the box as a sandbox. Starting the litter training in their cage can help the growth into a small room or space in your house. Let your pet out for around two hours and then put them back into their cage to go to the bathroom. Don't let him out until he does his business. When your pet ferret eats it will take about three or four hours before they are ready to use the restroom.

There is no step by step method for potty training a ferret. To make it happen you will need a lot of patience and understanding. Some days will be better than others and it will be a gradual process. Take small steps and expect accidents or times when it seems like your pet is purposely not using the box. Relax. He's just being a ferret!
