Some dogs are not able to snack on commercial products. My dog is one of those dogs. It has caused him to have an upset stomach and vomiting.
A time trusted method is natural remedies for cats and dogs. One of those natural remedies was to make home cooked snacks. I located excellent recipes from the Internet sources. However, I found that I have to be careful about the type of ingredients and how many to give my pet. He seems to put on weight because of the carbohydrates in flour.
Our pets need to be maintained on a healthy weight appropriate to their breed and activity. You do not need to chronically weigh your pet on a scale. If you can see or feel a waistline the weight is correct.
One of the snacks which my pet enjoys is made with liver. I read some information the other day which I will pass along to you. Liver is okay for dogs, but in small amounts.
The liver has many functions. One of those functions is to screen waste products. It is my understanding that it is those waste products which can cause problems in our canine friends if we feed them too much liver.
It can cause deformed bones, it can affect their muscles, cause excessive bone growth on their elbows and spine and there is a loss of appetite which leads to weight loss.
Were you aware of meats such as ham, bacon, turkey skin, and those tasty fried chicken wings and fat trimmings are harmful to our dogs? These meats contain too much salt and fat which can cause stomachaches and inflammation of the pancreas. Let us also include friend foods. Examples would be fries, potato chips and other snacks which are laced with salt and fried in animal fat.
The bones in the chicken wings can splinter and cause intestinal problems. Bones can be fed to dogs, but you need to be there to monitor. Some people grind the bones and mix it with dog food.
Vets have seen intestinal damage from splintered bones too many times. Avoid spoiled or foul smelling bones. Bones which are round and thick and appropriate in size for the mouth of your dog are great for chewing and scraping plaque off their teeth.
Cooked eggs are a good source of protein, not raw. I was always told raw eggs would help to give a dog a shiny and silky coat. But, I have been corrected. It was discovered raw eggs interfere with one of the B vitamins and does not aid in a dog having a shiny and silky coat of hair.
Do not feed your dog raw fish as it creates skin and coat problems, cooked fish is okay.
Of course, you have heard it is not good to feed your dog cat food as feline foods are too high in protein and fats.
Most commercial dog foods have changed to meet the needs of our domesticated dogs and cats. These animals are dependent on what we feed them. You may not want your dog rummaging in the garbage can or the trash can and eating spoiled or moldy foods as your pet will have diarrhea and vomiting, possibly worse.
We take care of our pets using commercial and/or natural ingredients. And I do my best to balance both ingredients to keep my dog healthy.
