The swollen and painful veins that occur in the anus or lower rectum area are called hemorrhoids. This embarrassing condition is actually quite common. Hemorrhoids symptoms include itching and pain or aching in the anal area, bleeding from the anus, pain when having a bowl movement, and hard, sore lumps near the anus. To rid themselves of the discomfort, sufferers immediately seek guidance regarding hemorrhoid treatment and attempt to prevent a recurrence.
If an individual has never suffered from this condition, also called piles, a physician diagnosis may be required. This can usually be made by a simple rectal examination. The doctor will then explain more about piles and treatment methods designed to relieve the pain, itching, and swelling. In most cases, doctors will recommend non-prescription hemorrhoid treatment using creams. Ingredients like corticosteroids and lidocaine reduce pain and swelling.
Applying a cotton swab dipped in witch hazel can provide relieve from itching. Itching is also relieved by refraining from scratching the area, using toilet tissue that is free of colors and perfumes, and wearing cotton undergarments. Soaking in a warm bath for ten minutes several times per day can also help an individual feel better. In many cases, this treatment for piles will cause the swelling and itching to subside.
To prevent future occurrences of hemorrhoids, individuals that strain during bowel movements should take stool softeners. These do not make a person go to the bathroom more frequently, they just make it easier for the person to have a bowel movement. Drinking at least eight glasses of fluids daily will keep an individual hydrated, which helps to prevent constipation. Consuming fiber will also help, so individuals should eat whole grains, vegetables, and fruit and take fiber supplements.
Complications that can arise from piles include clots that form from the blood in the expanded veins. When a clot occurs, it usually must be removed through a surgical procedure. In another form of complication, the tissue surrounding the affected area may die. Severe bleeding is another result, though rare, and prolonged blood loss can result in iron deficiency anemia.
It is important to begin hemorrhoid treatment immediately to prevent these complications from occurring. To keep piles from reforming, individuals should drink plenty of fluids and eat a diet high in fiber. When non-prescription treatments do not work, a physician should be contacted. In this case, treatment for piles may involve a surgical procedure or the situation may be a more serious issue.
There is more than one hemorrhoid treatment on the market that claims to be the best. However, we have found that more often than not, a natural hermorrhoid treatment is much better because of the lack of side effects. Consider these options before using any prescription products.
