We are about to uncover all the "beginner" things related to Starcraft 2. What is Starcraft 2, the game modes and options, the different races to play as, etc.

This guide is intended for the beginner; the person who has maybe heard about this game yet has not picked it up to play. If you are already familiar with this side of things, I suggest you check out my other Starcraft 2 guides to help you onto more advanced strategies.

So let us start by explaining what Starcraft 2 is. A video game in short, a Real Time Strategy (RTS) game more specifically. Starcraft 2 is a game played from a top-down view on a battlefield, much like how one would play chess with a godlike view overseeing all the pieces and the playing field. Your job in the game is to build up a base, raise an army, and destroy the enemy, quite literally, a war game.

There are two modes of play in Starcraft 2, a single player campaign which focuses entirely on the Terran race, and the multiplayer mode supported by Battle.net as a way to connect to other players around the world to compete against. While the single player is fun and challenging, you will probably spend most of your time on Battle.net, playing with other players.

The most important thing to learn before you play on Battle.net is the three races which are Terran, Protoss, and Zerg. Each race has different units and buildings and of course, a different playing style, so you its best you find one that suits you.

If you like to overwhelm your opponents with huge armies then you would like to play as the Zerg. Zerg units can be built on the fly and are cheap to train, but they are weakest compared to the other two races.

If you like your units to be more powerful however, playing as the Protoss would be a better decision for you. And if you like to make your defense as your offense, Terran would be the optimal choice as they have very good defensive units.

Just remember that there is no one race that is clearly dominant over another. Blizzard has taken the time and effort to balance the game fairly, so every race has its own strengths and weaknesses. There will be numerous people and websites out there proclaiming what the best race is, and to be honest, there is none, so it is more important to choose a race that suits your style rather than choosing a race that you think will make you win games because somebody said so.

Once you have got a good understanding of all 3 races in Starcraft 2 it is probably a good idea to actually get in a game and get to know the User Interfaces and various game functions such as unit commands. It really doesn’t matter if you choose to play single player campaign or play multiplayer verse games, as long as you actually get in a game and start getting the feel of things.

However, that being said, I highly recommend you start with the single player aspect of StarCraft 2, at least until you are more comfortable with the game mechanics. Because there is a lot more then choosing a race or getting to know the in game functions for the multiplayer game.
