A casual golfer is one who genuinely enjoys golfing just for fun. They love the social aspect of it and can count on the exercise to improve their health while playing a game where scores and rules are not the main goal.
Though most like the idea of improving their game and playing well, they're not as serious about golf's competitive aspect. To them it's just a game to play with friends on a beautiful day and on a good course.
Do You Fit The Profile?
While it’s often obvious which golfers are competitive and which are casual, here are a few characteristics that may set you apart from your more competitive golf acquaintances.
-
- Keeping score is not a priority and many times the score card is tossed in the trash.
-
- Or, if you do have a great round, you may keep the score card to display proudly.
-
- When you miss a shot, you take another and don't bother counting all the shots missed.
-
- You don't worry about the perfect clubs. You rent, borrow or even purchase ones you like regardless of the statistical data surrounding each set.
-
- When no one is behind you, you play how you like and have fun with the game.
-
- You’re versed on the basic rules of golf but you will use tees when you need them and the club that works best for you.
-
- You may improve your game with a few well chosen "stories" but again, it's all in good fun.
On a More Serious Note...
Keep in mind that there are many serious golf players who play competitively. You will run into them often so be aware of a few common sense tips to help everyone enjoy their game.
-
- Make sure you keep your casual group moving. Though having fun is important, if you are too slow, you may anger the serious golfers behind you.
-
- Let serious golf groups play through. They will appreciate it and you'll be more relaxed.
-
- If you are playing with competitive golfers in the same group, ask them about what rules you should follow. Keeping quiet and focused on the serious golfers may in the end improve your game.
We hear so much about playing by the rules, and golfers should if they are competing. However, if you're out just to have fun, and brag about an occasional great shot, then why worry about the rules. So grab a friend head out to the course and have some fun. Plan your game and be courteous to the "real" players and everyone can enjoy themselves respectfully.
