Freelance Writing Tips for Getting Your Foot in the Door
How do I get editors to talk to me? How do I get my foot in the door at publishing houses? What does it take for me as an unknown freelance writer to get a chance to at least show my skill?
Getting into the freelance writing industry can be tough, but with a little determination and the correct attitude, you can get your foot in door and not have it smashed in the process.
First understand that there is no magic formula. Most of the writing industry is built on relationships, and building relationships takes time. One of the most effective ways to begin building those relationships is by attending writing conferences.
Go to writing conferences to meet editors and publishing house executives. At most conferences, editors and publishing house executives make themselves available to meet with writers in order to look at their work and give them some feedback and critique. Schedule some time with those who publish books and magazines that serve the audience that you hope to write for. Listen to their advice, submit your proposals then adjust the things they tell you to adjust. Build trust. Let them know that you are a professional and that you are easy to work with. Most of all, listen to what they have to say.
Another key to getting noticed is to build a reputation for one style of writing, or being an expert on a certain topic. In the industry, this is known as building a platform. Be consistent in presenting yourself to other professionals in the industry. If you are consistent in your writing style, your focus, your topics, you will be more memorable and appealing to the "gatekeepers" of the industry.
Getting your foot in the door will require some risk. Everyone will not like what you do. You need to develop a dedication to success. Don’t let a few negative comments stop you from achieving your dream of freelance writing.
Learning how to be a freelance writer isn’t always easy. If it was easy, everyone would do it. But if you stick with it, apply what you learn and learn from your mistakes, you’ll be on your way to becoming a successful freelance writer.
