One of the least used rooms in a house is often the attic. There is usually a good reason. Some have limited access and rarely have the amenities included to make it a cozy place to be. This makes it an area that most people in the household avoid whenever possible. To make the attic a more inviting place and make the most of the space available in it, do a custom remodeling project. There are a number of features that can be added, as most attics are unfinished.

Ceiling

The most daunting part of an attic is the ceiling. Looking up usually reveals wooden beams, rafters, nails or insulation. If there were ever any leaks, the evidence is plainly visible. A new ceiling system can provide insulation from heat, cold and noise.

Floor

Many unfinished attics feature throw-down flooring that is not only unattractive to look at, but is unsafe to walk on. An attic remodeling project can transform the floor. Add carpeting on top of the floor to reduce noise to the rooms below and give comfort to bare feet.

Access

Not all attics are easy to reach. To make the area functional, it will need a permanent staircase that is easy and safe to climb. The entrance into the attic should be well-lit and non-hazardous. Add railings and doorways if needed.

Electricity

In older homes, the upstairs may not have electricity. While this can add considerable cost to the project, it makes a drastic difference to anyone entering the room or staying in it for any period of time.

Water

Most homes have water pipes running up through the attic. Putting a bathroom or kitchen in this area for versatility may be a matter of extending pipes and covering them over with ceilings and walls.

HVAC

When an area is excessively cold in the winter and very hot in the summertime, it will not attract a crowd. Add in heating and air conditioning systems, and the comfort level of the area grows by leaps and bounds. It may be simple to add in a separate system from the rest of the house. The accessibility of power and ducting will make the transformation easier.

Coziness

Decor is one of the keys to making the attic a place people want to be. Carpeting, furniture, artwork, window treatments and entertainment systems all contribute to an area’s comfort factor. Making an attic cozy is done by design. Many residential remodeling companies offer interior design suggestions in addition to performing the work.
