One way or the other, there is a reason why we get to be so interested in kayaking. A common reason could probably be a member of the family or a friend is into this sport. Another possible reason is the environment. You might live in an area where white water rafting is a hobby of the people who are in your neighborhood or you might have seen a kayak or people doing some kayaking in a magazine or blog and your interest keeps on rising.

Whatever the reason is, you need to start things right and in order for you to be able to do it the right way, it is important that you know the basics of kayaking. You need to know if you have the right reason for it. Ask yourself first why you want to get into this rough water sport. For starters or beginners, the kayak type is important because you need to know which one will fit. As a beginner, you need to know which kayak matches well for recreational paddling. Recreational paddling is for casual paddling such as in calm water like the flat-water rivers or ponds. Recreational kayaks can be classified as single, tandem, or tri-yak.

You also need to know how to buy a kayak. Kayaks usually have the best deals in town when these are bought during off-season. The design of the kayak also matters. If the seat is placed in or very near the center, you will be able to move and turn more efficiently as compared to seats that are placed near the back. Your height and weight should also play a factor in determining the size of the kayak. The phrase, "one size fits all" does not apply to this scenario.

Learning how to get in and out of your kayak properly as well as basic paddling strokes will help you move forward, backward and turning around. Other equipment should also be prepared such as floatation device, signal device, spare paddle, repair kit and first aid kit. Of course, never go out kayaking without your helmet. One of these days, you will need the help of your helmet in protecting your head from possible injuries. Having all these accessories will come in handy one of these days.

Kayaking injuries are common. Commonly injured areas are on the upper extremities, the shoulders and the hand areas. Back injuries could also happen. Sunburns and blisters are also possible especially during hot weather. Temperature-related conditions like hypothermia or heat stress is also possible. Knowing what to do in case these things will happen will help you remedy the injury that you might have.

Kayaking for starters need not be complicated as long as you will be able to prepare the things that you need to know and the things that you need to have. When you are ready to go down the water, everything else will follow.
